An MCTC Design Portfolio Show 2016

Best of Show Peer-to-Peer Award Winners

MCTC Design “See The Menagerie 2016: An unforgettable collection of multifaceted designers and developers unique in taste and talent”.

These students of this year’s MCTC graphic and web design portfolio class have singled a few peers for their exceptional design work in their culminating “Menagerie” design show.

Ryan Maynard (GRPH), Nicolas Gluesenkamp (WEBi), Sebastian Pérez (GRPH/WEBi) were awarded this year Best of Show Peer-to-Peer Portfolio Contest by their classmates.

Four were also given Honorable Mention Awards: Lauren Barber (GRPH/WEBI), Sierra Riggs (GRPH), Benjamin Callow (GRPH), and Mitchell Granholm (WEBI), but all of the “See The Menagerie” students are winners.

Only the Portfolio students themselves choose award recipients via written peer review. The first place winners each are each given a full CC Adobe Creative Suite software package. This award is funded by Graphic and Web Design alum Manuel Castellanos Raboso (Adobe), and Graphic and Web Design faculty Jake Jacobson.

In the voting process, each portfolio student was given the opportunity to award three votes to their peers covering several evaluative areas:
• Overall creative presentation of the portfolio
• Overall creativity, focus, and uniqueness portfolio
• Overall continuity in presentation of portfolio
• Overall leadership and team/class participation of “See The Menagerie”
• Overall design principles presented in the portfolio
• Overall body of creative work
• Overall representation of the ideals of the creative design industry and their
“See The Menagerie 2016” stated mission


Ladies and Gentlemen, designers and friends, welcome to the greatest show in the world! Come see the Menagerie!

The graduating design students at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) are hosting a unique design portfolio event to

showcase their work. Come see the creative work from a myriad of talented designers and developers presented through a colorful carnival-esque lens. Enjoy refreshments and network with emerging creatives while you explore their design work across a variety of platforms. The graduates highlighted in Menagerie have a lot to share with you!

In addition to the portfolio exhibition, Menagerie boasts a variety of influential guest speakers including Clockwork’s Nancy Lyons and Haberman’s Jeff Berg. We’ll kick off the show with an alumni panel, who will discuss their creative journeys. While exploring the design work, take a spin on the prize wheel to have a chance at winning a beautiful limited edition screen print and other great take away items. See you at the Menagerie!

Our Menagerie Keynote Speakers


Nancy Lyons

Tuesday. May 3rd
5:00 P.M.

Nancy works at the intersection of technology, community, and people. As a leader and technologist, she creates solutions that further community and business goals by meeting the needs of individuals. Nancy supports clients and teams by fostering a collaborative, idea-driven culture that nurtures creativity and brainpower.

She speaks extensively about work culture, social media, technology, and leadership and has been locally and nationally recognized for her role as owner and CEO of Clockwork. She’s co-author of Interactive Project Management: Pixels, People, and Process (New Riders, 2012), serves as the Vice Chair on the National Board of Directors at The Family Equality Council, is on the Board of Trustees at Minnesota Public Radio, and is a member of the advisory board for the innovative entrepreneurial conference, Giant Steps. |


Jeff Berg

Wednesday. May 4th
5:00 P.M.

Jeff Berg is an experienced designer that has worked in the industry for almost 20 years. A graduate of MCAD, Jeff has served as Art Director for Nickelodeon, Creative Director for Olson and Target, and is currently Creative Director at Haberman. Jeff has also authored and illustrated his own children’s book, titled “Mrs. Claus and the Batty Christmas,” and has served as a board member for Neighborhood Roots, the organization behind the Kingfield, Fulton and Nokomis Farmers Markets.

Andrea Blakely

Andrea is a former middle school Family and Consumer Science teacher. In 2013 she decided to pursue a degree in web design at Minneapolis Community Technical College. She used her vivacious passion for creativity and team collaborations to combine both of her degrees to start her career as a digital project manager at Periscope in Minneapolis, MN.


Guedda Hassan Mohamed

Guedda is a graphic designer who solves problems with a methodical approach. His passion for typography and minimalist vector art allows him to create engaging visual solutions. Guedda lived in France before moving to Minnesota in 2012. His multicultural background gives him a global worldview, which influences many aspects of his designs.


Raúl Villanueva

With heart and passion put into every design he produces, Raúl Villanueva’s intent is to create tactical creative solutions to connect with a cross-cultural audience through digital design, illustration and branding.


Maria Sanchez

Maria is a freelancer who is curious by nature and an artist at heart. Her work consists of designs and illustrations that incorporate a rich heart of culture and symbolism. She is a cross-cultural problem solver.


Claire Bailey

11:00 A.M.

Claire is a graduate of the Web Design and Interactive Media Program at MCTC and holds a BA in Psychology. Her background spans the fields of psychology, print, digital development and design. As a User Experience Designer at The Nerdery, she enjoys a career that combines her passion for design and empathy for people.


Julie Umhauer

Julie graduated with both print and web degrees from MCTC in 2015, and holds a BA in mass communication from the University of Minnesota. After graduating from MCTC, she was a freelance designer and contract front-end developer. She is currently employed as an associate digital developer at Periscope.
